Pivotal Vibration Machines – Cardiotech CV9 versus Hypervibe Performance – An Update

In an older article about these two machines I wrote of the Cardiotech CV9, “The CV9 is the work-out machine. Being a new model, just onto the market this month (that was in July, 2012), it’s just a little unproven…  Cardiotech CV9 can be used for therapy/physio purposes.  This has been the main use for me” . I had a knee injury at the time and was using the CV9 for rehab to help regain movement and  strength.

And of the Hypervibe Performance I said, ” it’s a real work-out machine.  It really challenged me… but if you need just simple stimulation and increased circulation this machine will do that too.”

 

Now it’s time for a review and update

These two brands of high-speed, pivotal Vibration Training machines are available in Canada, U.S.A, Australia, and New Zealand (and some other countries also). Both machines are used for fitness training and/or therapy purposes and they come with an identical price tag and so which machine should you buy?

Which brand is best? Which company will provide you with the information you need for effective use? Which provides best ongoing support? What other considerations should you make?

I’ll say it now, one machine is superior – The Cardiotech CV9

Let’s have a look at each machine and at what’s provided when you buy.

Both the Hypervibe Performance and the Canadian version of CV9 (known as Complete Vibe 9) test accurate at frequencies of 6Hz to 28Hz [see notes 1 and 2] and both machines are suitable for fitness and strength training.  Both can be used for therapy, to stimulate circulation, improve balance in older or limited-mobility people, and rehabilitate after injury or illness.  Of course, you need to know how to use the machine for your intended purpose and this instruction must to be readily available in an easy to understand booklet, DVD media, or even personal training sessions. These machines are both suitable for use at home and also for therapists; beauty salons, small gyms and personal trainer studios, and even for your workplace, so knowing how to use them safely and effectively is essential. Both companies provide information.

So, why does the Cardiotech CV9, rate so much higher than the Hypervibe Performance, in my opinion?

I’ve already said both brands test true frequencies of 6Hz through 28Hz but after that so much is different. The platform of the Cardiotech CV9 is 72% larger than the Hypervibe Performance. And the CV9’s platform is accessible on all sides with the control panel column located on one corner of the machine rather than attached to the centre back of the platform.  This design removes restriction on the poses or type of exercises and that can be performed. In regular use  the CV9 is more durable and more stable than the Hypervibe Performance. Interestingly though, despite the CV9’s platform being much larger both machines have the approximately the same dimensions.

The CV9 was designed on the “shop floor” specifically taking into account its intended use – fit for the purpose.  The Hypervibe Performance is the same vibration machine that several brands sell but is modified during manufacture to improve it’s stability and performance at higher speeds for fitness training .

The Hypervibe Performance machine has a slightly higher amplitude, 11mm and higher G-force and this is used as a selling point for this brand.  The designers of the CV9 chose to stay with 10mm, the same as the original German machine that these machines are based apon.  With the large, accessible platform of the CV9, a 10mm amplitude and slightly lower G-force was found to give the user a comfortable, stable experience. The Canadian version of the CV9, the Complete Vibe 9,  has another feature to provide for user comfort, called “weight adjusted sensitivity” [see notes 1 and 2].  If the machine senses a move in the user’s position on the machine, such as a change in foot movement, it slows down for just a few seconds reducing the force that’s going to the user’s joints. The first time this happens the person might wonder if the machine has a fault so it’s important to know why this short slow down has occurred. If you are looking to buy a machine its also good to know that both are able to take high user weight, of up to 180Kg.

The materials the machines are made of differ, with the Cardiotech CV9 made with a high tensile steel frame wrapped in a gloss plastic finish. The Hypervibe is made of a mild steel with some plastic. It has been strengthened to differentiate it from other machines that come off the same mold.

The control panels on the machines look very different; the Cardiotech has a smooth touch panel with choices of program plus manual control. It also has a remote control unit for use when the control panel is out of reach such as when kneeling for arm positions. The Hypervibe has a push button choice of program with an LCD display.

 

The most useful difference about the control panel is that the Cardiotech CV9 has an 8 second countdown before the machine starts.

This gives the user an 8 second time frame to get into perfect position on the platform before the machine motion starts. And it makes the little remote control unit superfluous so if the kids or dog run off with it or it’s confused with the TV remote and lost down the back of the couch, no worries!

A very important point is the after-sales support provided. When buying a Vibration Machine I’ve seen this range from giving some basic essentials about how to use the machine while you are still in the showroom through to supplying a fully guided program, printed instructions and pictures and/or DVD’s.  Even better is having one-on-one contact with someone who will give you information and guidance specific to your individual needs and desired results.  Sales talk is all very well; knowing who to contact after your machine arrives and you are starting to use it and need help, that’s what’s important. And what if the machine develops a fault, how do you go about getting it fixed? Will the company still be in business and does your warranty have any real worth?

Both companies promise good backup. Cardiotech, the larger company also has an association with other vibration training companies who would guide the enquirer and would “go to bat” for them in the unlikely event a warranty request was overlooked. With Hypervibe I see that there’s an email address for contact.

Hypervibe’s online product info states that they provide a User Guide, interactive CD, 2 years warranty, and 1 year physiotherapist support. They also sell for $99, a DVD course about vibration training. I wonder what you get from the DVD that is more than the freely provided training and if the information is necessary you shouldn’t have to pay extra for it, in my opinion. Cardiotech provides a 2 year labour and parts warranty, a CV9 specific comprehensive “strength and toning” user guide developed by Lloyd Shaw and endorsed by the International Vibration Training Regulatory Board (I.V.T.R.B), the same program used by commercial studios worldwide, also ongoing email support and lifetime membership to VibrationExercise.com where articles and training guides written by Dr. Jasper Sidhu can assist you with any therapy needs and teach you about vibration training in general.

In Conclusion

Cardiotech CV9 – Complete Vibe 9 – Premium Speed Vibration Machine

I totally recommend the Cardiotech CV9. In my opinion this machine is fully superior in design and performance. And it’s commercial quality yet designed to look good in your home. The after sales  back-up is there, readily available for your current and future needs. And the point I made almost two years about it being “new and being a little unproven” – that’s fully negated. The CV9 I have in the studio here has performed without fault.  I know that around 5000 units have been sold and I’ve heard nothing of any design or manufacturing problems.

 

Another point, about the companies providing these machines. As I’ve been involved in this industry almost a decade now, I know and hear a lot, the good and the bad. I support the use of all types of vibration machines and I want people to learn about them and find out what type or brand is most suitable for their needs. One thing that doesn’t go down well with me and with consumers in general is when a company uses scare mongering tactics to create fear and confusion among potential buyers and clients. This is an activity Hypervibe has engaged in by giving strong warnings on its website against lineal machines. Warnings that, just a few years ago,  involved quoting a horrible, out-dated, academic study where monkeys were deliberately tortured by being strapped to a vibrating platform for up to 30 hours. This action would kill any living organism!  The accompanying picture showed a woman with a pained look on her face, her hands holding the sides of her head. Obviously this is not the controlled whole body vibration as used for workouts and/or therapy but Hypervibe used this old study and it’s sad results to suggest that brain damage or even death possibly awaited users of lineal vibration, the machines such as ones I work with every day. Pushing this nonsense, obviously in attempt to gain sales of their own brand, their action was detrimental to the entire industry, scaring people away from all vibration machines and all the good training and therapy that can be achieved with their use. Its taken a lot of education and informative articles to counter this nonsense.

1. The Cardiotech CV9 is, at the date of this article, available in two versions, with slightly differing specs. The Canadian version, known as CompleteVibe 9, has a true frequency 6Hz through 28Hz .  The Australasian version, known as CV9 has a frequency limit of 22Hz which gives the user excellent pose control (ability to maintain their position on the machine, often a squat, without feet slipping which can happen to all but the most experienced user). The Australasian version, CV9 can be built to allow the higher frequency if a buyer requests this. Conversely the Canadian model, Complete Vibe 9, can be set to the lower speed, each use is instantly programmable on the touch screen.

2.  The Canadian CompleteVibe 9 model currently has the “weight adjusted sensitivity” feature. This will soon come standard on both versions. The small “comfort” features help set the Cardiotech High-Speed Vibration machine apart from all others for strength workouts, giving it a comfortable feel alongside an intensity of muscle contraction that is matched only by commercial lineal machines.

Vibration Training Anti-Cellulite Massage – Part 2

Note: This article is written from my viewpoint as a trainer and user of high-energy, lineal vibration platforms. The results and the experiences described are not necessarily replicable on lower level machines, such as PowerPlate, FitVibe, nor on pivotal platforms of any kind.
It’s just an anti-cellulite massage – right –
how can there be a Part 2; surely its not that complicated?

Well, yes, really it is – the vibration training anti-cellulite massage is complex; its quite different to the training program, and in some studios you even pay an extra price to add it to your program.

In part 1 I’ve covered the basic process of how it works, enhancing blood flow to the backs of the legs and the butt, breaking down some of the static fat and transporting it back into the circulatory system.

So, what does this massage actually feel like?

I’m going to start by saying, we get a lot of  jibes from the wider fitness industry about vibration training; the words – vibe, vibration, and anti-cellulite massage get talked about accompanied with raucous laughter and more so when they joke about girls sitting about on  heavily vibrating platforms.  Some of these jokes are deliberately trying to discredit the fitness and strength training that we do, rather than accepting it as a valid alternative to the gym, but it’s probably fair enough to laugh about the anti-cellulite massage; after all, the ladies anti-cellulite massage means sitting on the world’s most powerful vibrators.

Vibration Training – Shake ya Booty?

A friend commented on Facebook  that they wished there was a  Vibra-Train studio in their town so that they could join with us to “shake ya booty”.

I laughed, of course, but then thought that others might read that post and it might cause some confusion, so decided to write a brief blog on the different types of vibration machines and how they work. In doing so I’ll answer the question; do vibration machines “shake ya booty”?

But what about a vibration training session? Is it true that it “shakes ya booty” and if it doesn’t then how does it work? You need movement to really be exercising, right?

Getting Americans Moving

In December I read a blog on nytimes.com with the topic “Getting Americans Moving”.

Every week there’s an editorial in the newspaper, a television documentary, or a magazine article on this same topic “How can we get people to exercise” so I wasn’t expecting outstanding or anything new in the blog I read and I was right, it was all the same information I’ve read time and time before.

So isn’t the message getting through? Maybe it is and prople are ignoring it?

Of course the message is getting through. Worldwide, we all know that exercise is part of health and wellbeing. We all know there’s no pill, no potion, no nutrition supplement that negates the need for regular exercise.

Yet even the word exercise conjours up mixed feelings; some immediately respond, Yes! they love exercise, or their chosen sport, or spending time at the gym four or five times a week, bootcamp mornings, or maybe it’s as simple as walking the dog every day, or running in the park or along the ocean broadwalk. These are all regular exercise. There are iPhone apps to help and guide exercise, maps and distance trackers,Count my Steps, FitBit Activity tracker and more; used by people who love exercise and love to keep a record of how they are doing. » Read more: Getting Americans Moving

Vibration Training – 2012 – A Good Year

It’s the last day of 2012; in fact there’s only 7 hours left of this year here in New Zealand. And what a year it’s been! 

I’m going to stick to Vibration Training and try to list at least some of the highlights. Also personally for me it’s been a very good year.

We are at an exciting time in the timeline of Vibration Training; right at the point where Real Vibration Training and Real Vibration Machines – both pivotal and lineal – are becoming accepted as a fully valid form of fitness training. Not that  it hasn’t been accepted for quite a few years already but, in my experience, it’s been an ongoing battle with gyms and personal trainers and even with medical people like physical therapists. It’s felt like vibration machines have been seen as only a minor method of achieving results, up till now.

This has changed  – with the clean up of the industry worldwide  and with such an enormous amount of information available online (and big thanks to Lloyd Shaw for both), consumers, whether they are buying a machine or looking for a training studio, are aware and knowledgable. They are unlikely to be suckered in by smooth talking marketers. Likewise people starting up training studios or buying or leasing a machine for their fitness studio or gym know what questions to ask and what they want . Even the buzz words, lineal ( a variation of linear) and pivotal are well known and there’s very little confusion when questions are asked about machines.

2013 is going to be huge in this industry. I hope the marketers that sell home machines (the honest ones that is) and the studio owners and trainers are ready for this.

Vibration Machines are right now being used for:

High intensity fitness training for muscle strength and endurance. This is for athletes as an addition to their program. Vibration Training on high energy lineal machines does not make people bulk up, instead it provides muscle strength and shape and toning.

High intensity fitness training – the same as above but I’ve given it a separate listing – for everyone who wouldn’t list themselves as athletes. Some combine it with swimming or walking, some with jogging. Others use an exercycle or a bike. These people want the very best fitness and the very best toning and body look they can achieve and are prepared to vibration train three times a week (on real machines with a real program) to get it.

High intensity and/or Medium intensity training for people who really don’t want to exercise but know they need to, or they are time short, or they have minimal starting strength or fitness. These people get such good results by committing to training two or three times a week.

Therapy or Physio work and/or training for people with limited mobility, for whatever reason. Vibration Machines used with a proper program save lives. I’ve been in this category at times; after surgery and after injuring my knees, which I have an annoying habit of doing by tripping over things.

There are so many examples of results and on a hot, sunny, end of year day, I’m not going to attempt a long list, just a few:

One of my regular, twice weekly customers has gained a lot of strength. She’s mid-50’s and works cleaning large homes. She’s got way more stamina than when she started training with me early in the year.

There’s been many older people start training this year and I’ve had the privilege of watching them gain in strength and mobility. Also surety of balance, lessening the chance of falls.

And also some very young customers, young men mostly, ranging in age from 12- 17. I see changes in these young men within three or four visits. I’m left asking myself how they gain so much so very quickly. One younger client today, I commented on how his very curved and hunched over spine was already straightening up. He was walking “taller” and when I observed him in the mini-plank position his back was held straight.

I have just one customer in a wheelchair and several who do a therapy program where they sit in a chair with their feet on the machine, usually for 3 lots of 3 minutes. These customers tell me how much benefit this simple, no effort therapy is doing for them, improving their circulation and vey mildly stimulating leg and butt muscles and so reducing stiffness and for some getting rid of pain.

This list could go on forever so I’ll add just two more examples: 

My daughter has been training at Vibra-Train all year, three times a week, totally regularly. Her results are astounding. She’s changed from an extremely thin, low bodyweight, low strength, always tired young girl, into a very well toned, mildly muscular, healthy looking young lady. She’s stressing about putting on weight – oh yes, vibration training will do that to you IF your body needs it, but what a difference it’s made to her. She rarely gets sick now whereas before she seemed to always have colds and flu or just plain exhaustion.

And as I said, its been a good year for me personally. Looking back it seems I’ve spent a lot of time complaining, mostly about being “too busy”.  At the end of the year that doesn’t feel like something to complain about.  Busy is good! Mostly it’s been busy at my job at Vibra-Train Auckland City. We’ve seen many new people this year, run various promotions to keep the public knowledgeable and I’ve been actively updating the Vibra-Train Facebook page.  Along with being a very “in demand” trainer , well I didn’t leave enough time for the regular updates this website blog had in past years. I didn’t set up my own business FaceBook page, I didn’t get the look of this website updated – all these, and very much more, have been moved into 2013 calendar.

What I have achieved personally, as well as being the best vibration training instructor in the world, and part managing the world’s first and busiest vibration training studio, I’ve had my lease Vibra-Train machine out being used in a small Personal Training studio. Did I remember to say I get emails daily asking all sorts of questions about Vibration Machines and Vibration Training and I answer these with advice, examples, links and more. I’ve been the “man” behind the camera in a couple of video shoots, now on YouTube (under VibraTrain).

And in my health I’ve become well again. It’s been two years since my last operation and the surgeon was right, it’s taken the whole two years to heal. In the first year I gained a lot of weight, so my already bigger size blosomed almost 20Kg more. I was truely obese, nowhere near as large as the morbidly obese clients I train but, way, way too big; a result of not being able to exercise sufficiently while healing and consoling myself with too much food. I’ve said before, I’m an emotional eater, I eat too much when I’m happy and too much when I’m sad – I don’t believe I’m so different from most women excepting a few who have amazing self control. The good news is I’m back to exercising, doing the full Vibra-Train Safety Program, and being more in control of what I’m eating – I’ve lost 10Kg weight.

And so to a New Year. I’m very excited. There are challenges ahead and busy times. It’s going to be the best year yet!

The Ridges TV series – Here’s a Challenge to trainer Monty Betham

Monty Betham is a professional boxer, and was a former rugby league player in New Zealand.  He’s also known in New Zealand for his appearance on the TV program “Dancing with the Stars” back in 2008. Currently he’s a presenter on The Shopping Channel (New Zealand) He heads the Monty Betham Foundation  “Steps for Life”  program, set up to help youth and families live a healthy lifestyle and specifically “eliminating the many risks associated with obesity”.

Vibra-Train is a New Zealand company with head office and studio in Auckland, and licenced studios throughout New Zealand and abroad, providing Vibration Training and Vibration Therapy to paying customers and offering completely free, regular sessions to people with life threatening conditions including those with morbid obesity.  Lloyd Shaw set up Vibra-Train and specifically designed the machines and safety program with just one purpose in mind, to combat obesity.  As well as being an owner of Vibra-Train Lloyd is a mortician specialising in cases no-one else will handle. He sees much needless death, including so many who die from obesity conditions where they would not have died if there was exercse they really could do. He never tires of telling people of his dream to see New Zealanders forced to exercise, if necessary, and New Zealand free of obesity related deaths.

You’d think both organisations had a lot in common – I say, they do.. but it appears that Monty Betham doesn’t think much of Vibra-Train.

His comment in a recent television program offended me (I’m a hugely passionate Vibra-Train fan and Vibra-train instructor). Then I started hearing more from other people, that he “brushed off” Vibra-Train, calling it rubbish or words somewhat similar. I know Lloyd Shaw emailed Monty about what we were hearing and the reply came, not from Monty but from someone else.

My challenge to Monty is – Front Up Man; come into Vibra-Train one afternoon and let me personally put you through a workout session.  I specialise in making sure the guys who come into the studio get the best session possible and I expect perfect, classic positions on the machines. You’ll do the same workout that regular clients do.  Then let’s see if you have concerns about Vibra-Train being a valid training method.

Last week in New Zealand we watched the final of a Kardashian style TV experiement, “The Ridges”,  that followed socialites Sally Ridge (interior designer, televison personality, ex-wife of Matthew Ridge) and her daughter, Jaime (model, student, former girlfriend of All-Black and Boxer Sonny Bill Williams, and daughter of Matthew Ridge,  a former All-Black, Rugby League Captain, well known in NZ also as a TV Presenter). It was an exciting finish to the series that, just like the mother and daughter stars (and the Kardashians), was eagerly watched each week, or shunned.

Sally (mother) and Jaime (18 year old daughter) are well known New Zealand personalities and, like the Kardashians, you either love or hate them.  They are seen together most of the time , mother and daughter at parties, restaurants, socialising together and have been the topic of many recent magazine articles. Sally seems to thrive on being at the centre of attention – good on her, I say, If you can make money and fame by being in the social spotlight and you enjoy that, do it. She does it well, catching the camera’s eye at so many functions yet manages to, mostly, keep her younger children away from media and runs a regular household away from prying eyes. Jaime is really nice, a hardworking and intelligent university student, part time model, and fanatic about cleanliness and germs (watch one of the TV episodes to see how often the Hand Sanitiser is used).

Both Sally and Jaime have been regular clients at Vibra-Train Auckland City; that is, they are regular for a few months then not seen again until a fashion shoot, a holiday, or exams are over, and then they come back again. Both gained great results from their sessions when they came regularly two or three times a week.  Jamie especially gained muscle strength and toned up really well.

Then came” KFC Grandfather of All Fight Nights”.

A girls fight was to take place this year before the main event and Jaime was invited to go up against the GC star Rosanna Arkle, who said, “It’ll be great. I’ll  knock her out and go get some KFC” (fried chicken). Rosanna kept public interest in the fight by saying she’d wear a bikini, the style voted by the public. Jaime came across as the quieter one, the underdog; the public’s money was definitely on Rosanna.

“The Ridges”  TV series was predominantly about Jaime’s training and build up to the fight. Whilst Sally bought an old rundown house and set about rennovating it, Jaime had to share a room with her mother.  She was obsessed with the general, terrible state of the house and the germs; oh, and the mouse. If you haven’t watched Episode 1, I recommend it. And along with her university work, Jaime set out to get ready for the fight.  Her fight coach Monty Betham, a family friend, worked her very hard (with the television camera in her face a lot of the time). We saw her running up steep, grassy hills, punching hard into punching bags, throwing up from exhaustion and we saw her dieting in the stupidly, dangerous manner of eating and drinking nothing for two days, when she needed to lose a lot of weight in just a short time before weigh-in.

It annoyed me that the TV series showed this starvation diet. I’m hoping Jaime’s obviously distresed state will deter others. Worse was that she was on a weekend away with her mother, up the mountains in Queenstown, a place where you need to be well hydrated; even if you are just sulking and hiding away inside a ski hut.  Sally’s, “Oh my gosh, that’s crazy… it’s pure starvation”  comment but lack of any action must have had many women screaming at their television sets, “do something Sally, don’t just make empty comments”.  Even though Jaime’s an adult I was surprised at Sally’s casual attitude to what looked to be fast becoming a medical emergency. Throughout most of the series Jaime looked pale and got upset and tearful easily; well that’s what the tv cameras showed us and no doubt it was only half of what really happened. Just having the camera in your face for weeks on end, even following you to the bathroom when you are ill, must have been like a very horrible nightmare.

The no surprise ending to the series (as the fight took place in July) showed the fight, where Rosanna comes out punching and flailing her arms everywhere and Jaime takes aim well, defends well, takes out each of the three rounds and wins the fight.

No matter how much you love or hate Jaime or Sally (the mother who thrusts her quieter daughter into the limelight at every opportunity, along with herself, of course), you have to admit Jaime has come a long way.  Maybe her latent sporting genes played a part in helping her respond to heavy training through exhaustion; she trained hard, her coach pushed her and encouraged her and she won.

Congratulations have to go to Monty Beetham. He was charged with getting Jaime fight fit. He did it, she learned technique as well, trained hard and she won. There was lots of praise on twitter after the final episode screened.

So what’s the contention I have with Monty?

In part 2 of “The Ridges” there’s a conversation where Monty and Jaime talk about how he will train her. Jaime says for fitness she’s been doing Yoga and Vibra-Train The camera focusses on Monty as he tells us, “when she said her fitness regime consisted of yoga and vibra-train I was very worried”.

Why were you very worried, Monty?

Yoga and Vibra-Train together make up a very good fitness regime. I admit there’s very little cardiovascular work and that would need to be added to make up a balanced program but for flexibility, endurance, and muscle strength Yoya and Vibra-Train together are excellent. I watched Jaime increase in strength, lose fat and tone up during the time she was a regular client at Vibra-Train. In fact, I was one of her instructors.

 

I’m the Senior Instructor at Vibra-Train, Auckland City and I am personally offended when someone bags what I do. More so when they work in the same industry as I do (health and Fitness) and as well as working with the healthy clients and athletes they work with those who are less-abled, overweight and those with the life threatening condition of morbid obesity. This is my passion;  my job is not simply weekly paid employment, it’s what I love to do.

Vibration Training on high energy lineal machines, using an effective Safety Program, is the perfect tool for muscle strength for almost everyone. It’s used also for therapy and rehab purposes. Fat-loss happens as a result of increasing the metabolism and by developing and maintaining muscle strength.  I see lives changed as people grow stronger, fitter and in many instances lose a lot of fat. I count myself amongst those who have gained incredibly from this methof of training.

I’m so over other trainers saying negative things about Vibra-Train and Vibration Training when they have not even been into a studio to check it out. They’ve never even done a 15 minute session!

These trainers are, in my opinion, exceedingly lazy!  They speak against something they know nothing about. And what’s worse, is when a trainer that is good at what they do and well respected speaks out against a training method they know nothing, zilch, zero about.  This can be seriously off-putting to people who are considering trying vibration training for fitness and could, (at worst but quite possible scenario) prevent a seriously obese person approaching Vibra-Train to ask for FREE training to save their life.

So what do you have to say in reply, Monty?

IVTRB Lineal Vibration Training Safety Program and Type-1 Diabetes

The question is asked, “Can I come to Vibra-Train if I have Diabetes Type 1?”

I’ve answered this before and the quick answer is yes, you can use both pivotal and lineal machines, even high energy machines, as long as you’re blood sugar is controlled and stable; you test before and after your session (about 30 minutes after generally) and you know how to interpret the results and act on them.

You will see that some vibration training companies list type-1 diabetes as a contra-indication but here at Vibra-Train (high energy lineal machines) we allow and even encourage training. Our customers are fully supervised and we’ve never had any problems. In studio training is, I believe, safer and than using a home machine.

The same answer for people with type-2 diabetes – these people absolutely, must exercise, they are often overweight or obese and that has been one of the factors in actually developing diabetes. These people benefit from in studio training with the IVTRB safety program and fully supervised (the same as all customers) and where they see a “can do!” attitude – in all types of people from athletes to those with disabilities. Their fears and excuses about exercise very soon disappear. If they can’t access a studio or choose not to they can use a home machine – if they buy a suitable one. Just any cheap machine will not do the job!

One Customers experience

One of my client’s has type-1 diabetes.  She bought a promo deal we had running on a daily deal website.  She’s not the first person I’ve trained with this condition but I still wanted to be careful, especially with her first three sessions to see how she responded to the work-out.  She was trained exactly as all others.  We insist people eat at least a banana if not a whole meal before they train. This is a hard ask for some, who insist they don’t eat early in the morning (people who come in on their way to work) or they don’t ever eat right before exercise (at any time of the day). The rule is non-negotiable – no food = no training. Using high energy lineal machines causes blood sugar to drop. The first four poses have such high muscle response and you have no control over how hard you are training – the timer counts down 60 seconds while you maintain position on the vibrating platform; it’s very different to the way you can speed up and slow down when walking or running.

My client is a mother of two which is amazing in itself. She told me of the extra care she had when pregnant because of diabetes. She also works full time in a local business.

Coming in two or three times a week for the past month she’s seeing results – feeling better in mood and overall stronger; subjective for now; we’ll see her full results using  the Body Composition Analyser soon.

Happy WomanThe best thing and the reason for this article is: She’s had no problems at all with her blood sugar during or after training, no after effect problems the next day, and made no major changes to her medication. By eating a small amount of food before training her blood results have been stable afterwards.

She told me that when she’s done pump (a mix of light weights and movement, usually using a step), other exercises, and even yoga, she has had “bad” reactions with her blood sugar. She said it becomes irregular and remains that way for a few days even though she treats it. She goes through blood sugar lows and highs and feels unwell so has had to stop exercising. She did not tell me this when she started at Vibra-Train but she was very aware of the need for monitoring how she was doing.

It’s really, very good news that vibration training on high energy lineal machines at Vibra-Train, Auckland City, has showed itself to be a way of exercising that this client with type-1 diabetes can do.

Important:

This is one customer’s experience. It should not be expected that everyone with type-1 diabetes will have similar “no change” with their blood sugar testing. This article is based on my opinion and experience and on one client’s experience.

Advice to Vibration Training Instructors – Get Tough – Part 3

Having a real passion for what you do, and making sure you “walk the talk”  are the two essentials to help you Be Tough, not just while at work but in every discussion and workout that involves vibration training.

Part 3 of Get Tough has two sub-parts – The Fitness Industry and more about The Customers.

The Fitness Industry

Vibration Training as a relative newcomer to fitness training has been treated with suspicion and spoken critically against by some top Trainers and Coaches who absolutely should know better. It’s even been treated as a “fly by night” scam  Why? well maybe because it threatens their livelihood and they are too lazy or too stupid to upskill and learn how to use this new method of training clients.

As with other fitness machines there are varying qualities, from the “as-seen-on-tv” units and similar ones marketed with totally untrue specs and highly exaggerated advertising claims, through regular Home Machines, to High Energy Lineal and High Speed Pivotal Work-out Models, which used with a specifically designed program gives results of hugely improved muscle quality, toning and general fitness.

This is where the Fitness Industry is tested, some coaches don’t  believe results are possible without hours spent grunting over heavy weights or weight machines in the gym. They don’t want to believe there’s a simpler, more time efficient alternative to the same results. You know what, some people enjoy doing hours of training  but, not everyone has the time or even wants to  – so what is the fitness industry offering these people?   In Australia whole new Fitness Gym chains are being set up using the concept of 30 minute speedy circuit sessions that work!  Yet, vibration training has in the most part been still been left out. To placate members who ask for machines somegyms  have a medium level unit sitting in an out of the way corner but ask the personal trainer how to use it and they haven’t a clue. Many have never even tried the machine.

When challenged Coaches and Trainers still sometimes resist.  I remember, Sal Marinello (Certified Coach and Trainer of Trainers) refusing to try out a high quality vibration machine and instead trialling a Soloflex – a small gym stepper with a tiny $20 vibration motor attached by tape. He then used that experience to justify his already widely published rants against Vibration Training. You can read my article about this here: Sal Marinello has an agenda. This is what Vibration Training Instructors are up against!

Getting Tough means – Stop caring about what other fitness trainers say; don’t feel threatened by them, no matter what (on paper) qualifications they have. If they refuse to try out on a high quality machine using a real vibration training program then what they think or say isn’t worth listening to. Don’t get into arguments with them. Tell them how dare they comment on a training modality that’s readily available for them to try, yet they wont and still expect to have an opinion – Lazy!

I advise VibrationTraining Instructors to learn about the different brands and types of machines so that you can Be Tough and knowledgable when you come up against questions and comments from other  fitness or sports trainers.  Ask them how they train people with disabilities like muscular dystrophy or morbid obesity and what results they get.  Here’s a good question – how would they train an older man with uncontrolled parkinson’s disease (drugs are not effective in stopping constant shaking of one arm and one side of his body). He can use a stationary cycle but what about weight training? What method would they use to slow down or stop the wasting of muscles he’s experiencing? (This man is real and he is able to follow the full IVTRB Vibration Training Program).

Finally, Get Tough and Stay Tough, so you can be the best trainer you can possibly be. You are most probably going to be dealing with controversy within the industry, criticism from other sectors of of the fitness and health industries, and even from your own customers until they understand you really do know how to train them, safely and effectively to get great results.

One final tip – make sure your Boss backs you 100%. This will only happen if you’ve been diligent about learning the job really well. Unfortunately some customers will try to pit you against your boss – crazy really as they want results but some people just wont listen to instruction. Instead they’ll argue and tell you their session with the “other” trainer or the studio owner (your boss) was different and suggest you have been too hard on them or too restrictive, if you’ve had to correct their positioning.  Then they complain to your boss. Well, a good boss will listen to the complaint, and having confidence in you, will tell the client they must have been “out of position” or you would not have corrected them.  Maybe your boss will talk to you later, not in front of the customer, even correcting you on a minor point but mostly to encourage you to keep on Being Tough.

 

Vibration Training builds Muscle Strength in Arms and Chest

Quote from a customer – “after all the years I forced myself to use free weights and saw no change in my body; who would have thought it would be this easy to gain muscle strength and look better”

Okay – the quote as it stands is what he said – but it’s a bit misleading.  It was my husband, Greg, and readers of this forum will know that’s he’s been using Vibra-Train (brand) machines for about 5 years.  He is also a long distance runner.  There’s an article about him here http://www.vibration-training-advice.com/vibration-training-for-long-distance-runners-the-proof-is-in-the-results

So, what’s changed that caused him to say what he did?

The facts: Firstly Greg had an accident a year ago and he can’t run, at all!  His knees are still a problem.
And some truths – he didn’t do free weights regularly. He weight trained in bursts, a month or two, then nothing for three months until he’d think his core strength wasn’t as good as it could be then he’d use weights and Swiss ball again for another month.  Add in that his weight training form was never good as he has a severe scoliosis (running is usually not recommended with his back problems but he had been checked and his running style seen by a sports doctor).

Greg replaced his weight training with Vibra-Train sessions, in the same manner he did weights – he never came in regularly.  He blamed shift work and busy life but really he just preferred to run – Runners Run, they don’t like other training.  He got really good results though, real strength and endurance that he was able to use in running but he had a runners body, slim, gaunt, with low muscle quality.

Now that he can’t run Greg’s been more regular with Vibra-Train sessions. He came very regularly (3 times a week) for 3 or 4 months and to his (and my) amazement you could see visible change in muscle shape in his arms and chest.  He’s never had any noticeable muscle tone, very slim arms, so it was very obvious.  Then he did a time of long work shifts and didn’t come in to the studio very often.  He noticed a lack in energy levels and his muscle tone and the rounded look almost disappeared, it only took a month to revert to almost his pre-trained shape.

He’s been a regular again at the Vibra-Train studio for the past two months. He’s had lots of instructor guidance as his form was very bad. He thought he was holding the positions well but he wasn’t.  That’s why Vibra-Train is always supervised training.  We make sure customers do it right – there’s no making up your own positions or being nearly right – it’s perfect position every time!

Last Friday, Greg made the comment I’ve quoted above.  His body is responding so well to Vibra-Training and without the endurance training he used to do that depleted muscle, he can now, already, see visual results.  His arms and chest are developing form. To balance his training and gain cardio benefits he is able to do some walking.

Greg’s results are not necessarily typical although they happen quite a lot. What I’m seeing in the studio is that a person’s body responds in the way it needs to.  Everyone gets results, some get what they hope for faster than others. Other exercise that’s done can change the results and diet can help or hinder.

For about five years I’ve watched Lloyd Shaw follow the IVTRB Safety Program on Vibra-Train brand vibration machines – three times a week, every week. Well not quite, there’s been a few times he’s taken a break, just a week off, usually just one or two sessions. A short amount of time off any exercise training program is good, it allows the body to completely rest and still growth and gain continues.

Lloyd’s been following the Safety program for six years now. If you clicked through to the older pics you”ll see that Lloyd has lost size  – he no longer carries the bulk he had a year ago. This is an interesting change, he still eats burgers but I think he’s been a little more careful with food quality lately. I rarely see the pizza delivery man at the studio now. Nothing else has changed; Lloyd still eats when he’s hungry – and that’s an important point, he doesn’t overeat. He also doesn’t take supplements or steroids (never has). His protein intake is increased by a serving of pure pasteurized eggwhite (Eggcel) most days along with a few Vitamin C tablets and some Magnesium. He maintains a healthy gut and elimination with a spoonful of a fibre mix.

And this is the result, a slimmer, healthy body, with excellent muscle definition. Body Composition Analysis Machine test results put Lloyd in the highest category for muscle quality. His body fat level absolutely normal, right on the line.

When I think of the owners and marketers of many of the well known vibration machine brands I sometimes wonder what sort of results they are personally getting – from vibration training alone (its the only exercise Lloyd Shaw does).

I could name many who are young to mid aged guys. My challenge is – show us what you’ve got, show us a picture and tell us your program.
