Vibration Training 2011 – Back to Work

January 19th, 2011

Happy Slim Girl JumpingIt’s a busy start to the year here at the Auckland City Vibra-Train Studio.  We’ve had reduced hours over the Christmas break so some customers have kept up their regular training and others are coming back this week now they are back at work.  That’s one of the advantages about real vibration training it’s time sparing so people come in their lunchtimes and some even fit it into their morning or afternoon tea breaks if they work in businesses near the studio.

I work mornings mostly starting at 6.30am and other staff take over for the afternnons and evenings until close at 10pm. Then we also do Saturday and Sundays from 9am to 6pm so there’s never an excuse for people to say they want to come but the hours don’t suit.  I’ve had new customers every day which has been both hard work and lots of fun and rewarding. These “newbies” have been all different ages and body types and most have had no previous exercise experience. It seems that Fitness has been a New Years Resolution for many and I’m taking it very seriously to see that these people get the first experience and the ongoing results that turn their fleeting good idea into a full lifestyle change.

In the wider Vibration Training Industry I’m involved in many areas, from discussions and debates about “how things work” to having to refute a lot of misinformation.  Also I get emails and online contacts from people all over the world asking for help on various questions, from which home machine would be best for their needs to finding a studio or gym with training vibration machines that will enhance their fitness program. I write articles for various places, make videos for our YouTube Channel and am active in online social media.

People sometimes ask if I have a life outside of Vibration Machines. Yes, I do – I’m just not so sure where I left it right now.

International Women’s Day

March 11th, 2010

March 8th was International Women’s Day.  I didn’t see any reports of celebrations in New Zealand but over the week or two before I did notice women in situations I felt were less than desirable.

The first situation I noticed was at the Auckland International Airport as I came through Immigration and Customs.  A few families arriving on a flight from China had been moved to one side for additional questioning.  Among the group was a mother who was heavily pregnant.  Her shape suggested she would give birth very soon.  I was surprised as I know airlines have regulations covering travel past the 32nd week of pregnancy.  This lady seemed to be very uncomfortable.  Of course I have no way of knowing why she was flying.

Then going to the supermarket to stock up on groceries after a week away I went through the serviced checkout ( too tired to “fight” with the self-checkout that particular day).  The checkout operator was, just like the previous lady, very heavily pregnant and although she was seated she was barely coping with her job.  I was left pondering what domestic situation she was part of that meant that she was working in a supermarket so late into her pregnancy instead of preparing for and resting before her baby’s birth.

New Zealand was the first country in the world to give women the right to vote and women have equal rights with men in law.  Women may work in any industry and we’ve had women in the top roles, as Prime Minister and other government ministers as well as in managerial positions in almost every business.  Yet, sometimes I wonder how far we have really come?

PostScript: Some people have reminded me that pregnancy is not an illness.  I totally agree but I stand by my belief that there is a time to work and a time to take a little extra rest and in both cases I’ve written about the pregnant mothers looked very tired.

New Zealand Government Bans Benzodiazepines` as part of Boy Racer Legislation

October 25th, 2009

New Zealand’s National Party led Government enacted legislation last week to put a stop to “Boy Racing” and “Cruising” around streets repeatedly.  Last night’s legislation is the last step before this act becomes law and the government intends pushing it through Parliament under urgency in the next fortnight.

This sounds good but -

they added a the last-minute inclusion of a ban on driving while affected by benzodiazepine, a prescription sedative and anti-anxiety medication that is often used as a sleeping pill.  Not only as a sleeping pill, the effect of which wears off overnight, but also taken before air travel and other events that cause anxiety in many people.

The list of drugs in the class “Bendodiazepine” is long and includes the well known, commonly used (especially by older people) simple, anti-anxiety agents, Diazepam (Valium), Oxazepam (Serepax, Alopam), and Lorazepam (Ativan), along with the stronger hypnotic and/or skeletal muscle relaxants, Triazolam (Halcion) and Tetrazepam (Mylostan).  The time to peak blood concentration for the anti-anxiety agents I’ve listed is 1-2 hours with the elimination half life being 10 to as long as 100 hours.  That’s how long they can be detected in your blood.

This change to, in my opinion, a previously excellent piece of legislation is frightening in that it’s been added without public consultation as a Supplementary Order Paper.  So many people are affected by this yet have not been allowed to voice an opinion!  This act is now law and regular folk could be breaking the law by driving to the shopping centre after a good night’s sleep, all because they took a low dose relaxant like Lorazepam at supper time.  Airport lounges and Airlines  might find alcohol becoming more popular as business people and travellers look to relax while flying (and remain within the legal limits) and can no longer take a simple anti-anxiety tablet without possiblybreaking the law when they pick up a rental car at their destination.

In New Zealand we live in a democratic society – yeah, right!   This government has behaved as a dictatorship in this instance as the people have not had a say and have, in effect, had their democratic rights and free will taken away.

The New Zealand Act Party have done a good job, putting this into perspective.

http://www.act.org.nz/blog/benzodiazepine-ban-short-sighted

Yes, benzodiazepines do have an effect on you which is why they are used for anxiety, panic attacks, sleep disorders, and related problems and they are a simple drug, that in low dose, actually works.

An email reply to a  letter sent by a friend to Hon Steven Joyce, MP, states that people will only be breaking the law in regard to taking this class of drugs if they are driving while “affected” by it and they would only be tested if they were pulled over by Police for another reason.  This sounds reassuring but where is the line, what is the definition of affected?  There’s no definitive fail point as  in alcohol testing.

It is my opinion that this legislation is seriously flawed and this will, in time, be shown in court cases where the defendant is shown to have a reading of benzodiazepine in their blood test and will be hard put to prove their driving was not adversely affected by it..

So, what next? Will simple antihistamines like Chlorpheniramine and  diphenhydramine (Benedry) also be tested for and what about other anti-anxiety drugs, prozac and similar.  Some will say I am over-reacting to a piece of legislation put in place to protect me but remember this law started being about reigning in “Boy Racers” and has ended up much wider in application and set under urgency thus removing my democratic right of submitting a comment or opinion before the it was passed into law.

My flatmate has all the tact of a nuclear bomb!

June 14th, 2009

Totally off topic but I think the humour of the title says it all. I recently moved into a new living situation after many years of either living alone or with family who were so used to my comings and goings they rarely noticed.  All very different now I am living with flatmates most of the time, adjusting to a situation where people live in the same space while maintaining their individual lives.  I’ve been so lucky to have found a place in an established, modern flat with good flatmates.  In fact, I love it!

A few months ago when contemplating my move I remembered my teen years, and a more recent experience of living in an old villa, drafty and cold in wintertime with flatmates who “borrowed” my jackets and shoes, threw parties most Saturday nights and invited friends around every Sunday afternoon so that by Sunday evening, when I was getting ready for the week ahead at work, I had to wade through the rubbish left on the lounge floor by guests and  finding a clean cup or plate was impossible until someone did the mountain of dishes that were piled up in the kitchen sink.  It seemed I was the only one who couldn’t face seeing them still sitting there on Monday morning.  Don’t get me started on the state of the bathroom!

Wow, this time it’s so different! If a flat can be judged by the state of the bathroom mine gets 100%, let down only by the smell wafting from the bag of dirty socks waiting to be washed.

dreamstime_3184986Working morning shift I get up very early and try to be quiet.  I’m very aware of others so I creep around not putting on the TV or music.  I was even  going to work early and eating breakfast there so I didn’t make any banging noises in the kitchen but as wet and cooler weather have set in I’ve been having breakfast before I leave; eating cold cereal so I don’t make a noise using the microwave.

I’m now laughing – I’ve done it all wrong! I’ve been waking a flatmate by my actions.  If I’d made regular getting-up noises they might not have been noticed but by being quiet I’ve actually been noisy!  My flatmate decided to tell me about it last night choosing just the moment I was going to bed.  Coming out of the bathroom in my pj’s I felt incredibly vulnerable and more so as I’d been out for the evening at a family party so although I wasn’t  drunk, I wasn’t fully sober either.

I have unknowingly been waking this flatmate by turning the bathroom tap on and off several times as I wash and dress early mornings.  The action of turning the tap causes the pipes to creak and groan.  My flatmate told me vehemently how  affected he was by the pipe noise and demanded to know what I do in the bathroom each morning.  I’m sure he really didn’t want a descriptive account of “putting on makeup” but he got it anyway.

It’s time he learnt “there are two theories to arguing with a woman.. and neither one works!”

I feel so bad about waking him though and I wish he’d told me weeks ago rather than waiting until his patience was extinguished and then, with his usual lack of tact, just like a bomb, exploding!  As tired as I was I couldn’t sleep, longing for a hug as I felt so bad but with no family near and my pillow could not suffice.  The solution may be as simple as having a bottle of water to pour over my hands between makeup applications but now, for his outburst, I am planning my revenge, what will it be?

I want to lose weight – What breakfast should I eat before my walk?

May 26th, 2009

Cornflakes?  Meusli?  Coffee and Toast?  Does it really matter?

healthy muesli for breakfast in blue bowlResearchers at the Northumbria University, Newcastle Upon Tyne have found that the type of carbohydrate you eat before your morning cardio session  can affect the amount of fat you burn.

A study of 8 women aged around 24 years showed that by eating a low GI breakfast; think meusli, yougurt and skim milk;  before an exercise session, the women used up 50% more fat than those who ate a breakfast that was high in the type of carbohydrates that make blood sugar levels rise sharply, such as white bread or cornflakes.

Most studies done on pre-exercise feeding and glycemic load have been done on men and usually with endurance athletes who have special exercise needs whereas this study gives results useful to the general population.

For the study, on two different occasions the women walked on a treadmill for 60 minutes three hours after eating either a high or low glycemic index breakfast.  Blood samples were taken before, during and after the exercise, results showing the average amount of fat oxidized during the exercise was 7.4 grams after the low-glycemic meal but just 3.7 grams after the higher glycemic index meal, a nearly 50 percent difference.

Previous studies have shown that a low-glycemic menu before exercise is beneficial to fat burn but this study shows some additional results.  The caloric value of the breakfasts was always 265 calories but the low GI option had a higher fibre content.  We know that high glycemic carbs cause a rapid spike in blood sugar levels while lower GI carbs cause a lower blood sugar response and this may boost the body’s use of bodyfat for cardio exercise energy.

This study builds on previous results and although it used women of healthy weight it’s anticipated that the results hold true for those needing to lose some weight.  Low GI breakfast foods include whole grains, porridge, some whole grain cereals, soy and linseed bread.  Portion size remains important; eating a large amount of low GI carbs before exercise would be detrimental to both regular and overweight exercisers.

Sal Marinello has an agenda

March 17th, 2009

Quote from Sal Marinello:

my agenda is crystal clear…avoid snake oil – especially in the form of multi-thousand dollar machines for which there is no proof of efficacy, and avoid snake oil salesmen/charlatans who want people to believe that the ONLY way to improve their fitness level is to spend money on an expensive gadget.

He is, of course, talking about Whole Body Vibration Machines. His comment is taken from a series of articles entitled: The Healthy Skeptic.  Sal Marinello is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and Certified Personal Trainer (U.S.A.), Weightlifting Coach, Trainer of  trainers, who gives radio talks on ESPN and Fox Sports Radio? Is this the type of generalised warning the public wants from someone whose opinion is respected?  Did he also give this warning on Sports radio?  The warning sounds profound, doesn’t it, and it’s effect has likely been to scare off the very people that Whole Body Vibration helps best – Joe and Jane  Young American couple,  Mrs Overweight Smith,  Mr Torn Knee Cartilage Jones,  Mike (My Body is the Best and Chicks love me) Brown, Johnny (in a wheelchair) White – oh, hold on, that’s all sorts of people!

This warning is from a man who has NEVER used a Sports level (or even a quality home level) Vibration Machine.  His harangues were written before he trialled any machine and when he did, he chose to trial a Soloflex – a gym stepper platform with a tiny $20 motor attached by tape to the underside.  What was he afraid of – that a real sports machine might kick his butt?

Let’s look at what Sal says: There’s some validity to his claim that Vibration Training and Vibration Therapy do not have scientifically proven results.  This is a new industry and studies have been flawed, often being financed by the company benefiting most from a positive outcome rather than an independent study.  There have been good results  but more controlled studies are needed.   Lloyd Shaw, founder of Vibra-Train and spokesperson for the International Vibration Training Regulating Body (IVTRB) responded to Sal Marinello’s claims by saying, I do not believe Sal is stupid enough to think all platforms perform the same function, as he has tried to imply by putting all research results under the term “WBV”.  It would be of a more logical conclusion that he is doing his best to mislead the public to back up his previous statements”. Those statements include calling people in the Vibration Training Industry “hucksters”, equating Vibration Training with Subway travel and Jackhammer work, and in doing so, saying it can’t possibly work.  It’s my opinion that anyone who can use the Google search engine will find simple explanations of the difference between Vibration Training and Industrial and Travel vibration.

My opinion also is  that Sal has deliberately set out to mislead the public. My question is why?  Surely his Personal Training business isn’t financially threatened by his clients using Vibration Machines to complement and enhance their training?  Sal seems to like Kettle Bells and promotes walking and stretching to people who want to improve fitness, tone up, lose weight. I agree, those activities are beneficial but many people can’t or wont do them.  These  people Vibration Training CAN help, especially those who need a boost to get them started and are maybe too obese to want to walk far.  And, of course, many Sports trained people, like Rugby Players, Wrestlers, Body Sculpters do Vibration Training on a regular basis and testify to the gains they achieve.   Sal Marinello calls this “anecdotal evidence” and so it is but that’s how good news gets out!

And lastly Sal’s concern about the price of Vibration machines and Training; I consider that a compliment especially as each time he complains I get to point out the cost of a Vibra-Train Studio visit is around US$7 (much less than gym fees and personal training!) and yes, good quality machines do cost a lot of money, being made with solid steel and longlife motors, I wouldn’t trust any machine made to lesser specs.

Off Topic – Internet New Zealand Blackout

February 22nd, 2009

I said I’d be posting the occaisional Non-Vibration Industry posts and this is one of those times.  Please read this:

Copyright aims to balance private property rights with specific public rights in a way that encourages innovation in the arts, business, culture, and public commentary.  But if the balance is not right, innovation is stifled.  If  section 92 comes into effect then public rights will be drastically undermined by a law that automatically treats people as criminals.

Laws regulating the act of copying have failed to keep pace with technology and soon ISPs will be forced to take down internet connections and websites of anyone accused (not convicted) of copyright infringement. Copyright law is now having the effect of limiting artists, restricting businesses, and harming public rights.  For more information See:

To my friends and family

January 22nd, 2009

Thanks for looking at my new site setup.  I’ve appreciated the feedback. It’s been suggested by some that I drop the Vibration Training theme and simply use the website as a blog, like an online diary, as many do.  That’s not going to happen.

My website and registered trademark VibePlus are specifically for promoting Vibration Training – it’s benefits as an exercise form for fitness and good health.  Also some related interests at times – nutrition, sports, other forms of exercise.  Comments about other subjects will be few but I will be posting articles about my own experience of Vibration Training – as a user of Vibration Machines and a sometimes Instructor.

Over two years I’ve proven how incredible the benefits of regular Vibration Training, using a safety program, can be and I’ve learnt a lot from that experience (and some study and lots of questioning) that I’m now able to share with others.  Teaching about and Instructing in Vibration Training is what I enjoy most.
