Older Women and Vibration Machines with Side Handle Bars

August 14th, 2009

It feels like spring in New Zealand as the air temperature has risen and we’ve had blue skies this week.  Alas, it’s only August and there’s more cold and wet weather ahead before we get to enjoy the long balmy days of summer.

This week has seen an lot of newcomers coming into the studio for their first free trial visit and some of these have been older women.  These women tell me their reasons for coming in; improved mobility, fat-loss, fitness and general well-being.  Some say they want to ensure their bones remain strong and prevent osteoporosis.  It’s exciting to get these women into the studio as they are usually not sports oriented but have lived active lives and now having slowed down a little they recognise the need to rebuild fitness or they simply want to keep the muscle strength they already have.

Ski The Slopes Vibra-TrainI feel privileged to work for Vibra-Train as we have a vibration platform that’s perfect for these women to use.  It’s called the Vibra (or Vibra-Train) and as well as the platform having upward vibration it has vibrating  side handlebars.  This machine’s handlebars were specifically designed for people who find it difficult to hold a 110 degree angled squat position.  By holding the side handlebars users are able to push down with their arms to take some pressure off the quad muscles (the thighs) while  more easily holding their body in the correct squat position.  » Read more: Older Women and Vibration Machines with Side Handle Bars

HyperVibe – Premium Speed Pivotal Vibration Machines

May 13th, 2009

On a recent visit to Sydney, Australia, I was privileged to visit Debbie at Beach Body Vibe, Vibration Studio at Bondi Junction, near beautiful Bondi Beach.

The machines Debbie has are the HyperVibe platform. These are controlled premium speed pivotal machines. Debbie holds classes for muscle toning, weightloss, overall body workout and more. Her customers range from athletes to the elderly and she runs classes for up to 5 people or private sessions.

HyperVibeMurray Seaton, the General Manager of HyperVibe, had dared me to try out his machines as I’d previously written that Pivotal Vibration was suitable for Therapy and Light Training only. Murray told me that his machines were definitely work-out models and that he’d told Debbie to “go hard” and to give me a gruelling session.

I was still recovering from a shoulder injury and when I arrived at the studio, very tired after an early morning flight from Auckland, so I was just a little concerned. My previous experience of large pivotal machines was not at all positive as the machine had an uncontrolled rapid see-saw effect that made me feel dizzy.

I’m pleased to report that my experience was very good. HyperVibe machines run at a tested, controlled frequency of 6-28Hz and 11mm peak to peak amplitude. This means that the see-saw effect is so fast that the machine feels quite similar to pivotal/vertical vibration and, Murray, I agree, your machines definitely give a workout. I used the machine on approx 25Hz and hesitated in doing more than simple squats due to my injuries and tiredness. My friend did a more rigorous workout including single-leg squats and push-ups. Next day we both felt a little sore which was the only negative as we don’t get this from the Vibra-Train Studio vertical platforms we regularly use.  HyperVibe machines can also be purchased for home use.

Tough Guys 2

May 5th, 2009

Two other tough guys who come into the Vibra-Train City Studio and are worthy of congratulations as they work-out very hard.

The first is an elderly frail looking PriestYes, you’ve read it right. Remember Vibration Training is for everyone!

And we can also provide Vibration Therapy for those who need rehab or a less intensive workout due to injuries or health concerns.  Not so with our Priest,  he works out harder than most, only some athletes could be said to train harder.

The first time I watched over him (he loves the attention and I’m sure he fakes forgetting which position comes next) I was scared, watching this 80-something man hold good position on the machine and cunningly set the dials to 120 seconds instead of the regular 60 seconds.  He’s been given permission to do this but only on some positions and he really is very sneaky.  A real character, I now look forward to his visits.

It could be said he brings some balance to the studio as he leaves saying, “God Bless You”.  I smile as I hear Lloyd in  the background yelling at a customer, telling them to “tough it out” and telling them “God’s not going to help you”, in response to plaintive cries of “Oh God, God, this is too hard!” Hard training and maybe God’s blessing keeps our Priest very fit and strong.

Tough Guy with AttitudeThe other “tough guy” I’ve had in the studio recently was a “newbie”.  This guy’s attitude preceded him as he walked in the door.  He was, “I know it all.  I did vibration training years ago”. He told me he used to sell another brand of machines.

I warned him that Vibra-Train machines had a much stronger force than the ones he’d used and they would seem like toys in comparison as they were suitable for therapy and light training, not enough for a muscle-bound guy like him.  The first 60 second basic squat was all the  proof needed.  He changed his story, telling me actually hadn’t used the other brand machines often and although he had helped with sales, this was only weekends and it was “years ago”.  Working through the “Safety Program” and he trained hard, completely failing several times, not able to hold the positions correctly.  He loved it.  Showing him the higher level machines (the Level 3 and Level 5-Sports Model) I overlooked telling him that all Vibra-Train machines use same frequency, 43Hz, that’s not the factor controlling the “force” of the vibration as some other brands say.

A final “pull-up” position (only possible on machines with vibrating, side handle-bars) was the clincher, he paid up for a concession card right away.

Fair, Fat, and Forty

April 28th, 2009

That rather disparaging title is descriptive of some of the newcomers I’ve been privileged to introduce to Vibration Training over the past month.

It’s a group I’m very excited about and I want to make their first visit to Vibra-Train a positive experience.  Alas, I can be too soft and that’s a huge mistake!  Of myself I’d mess up by maybe expecting less, allowing less than perfect position on the machines; the result being that these people would not get the first work-out experience they could and then would not understand the amazing benefits they can gain from regular visits.

So, now, I understand why my boss has been so hard on me!

I’m very hard on myself and in the past I’ve expected top performance from others, so much that in one workplace I was horrified to find I was feared by my assistants.  I’m fast regaining that strength of character, not to bully but to insist on the very best performance.

Beautiful FortyIn my job this means that every newcomer gets to experience Vibration Training as they should, just as we advertise it to be!  By being hard on me, insisting I learn the  instructions word perfect and in the correct order; that I’m emphatic about correct positions on the machines, no matter how hard that seems to the customers; and that I lose the softness that has crept into my training style, I can now ensure each customer gets  a quality training session and reaps all the benefits that Vibra-Train gives.

Thank you, Lloyd

My New Job – Update

April 24th, 2009

Having almost completed my third week as an Instructor at  Vibra-Train I’ve had time to settle into the job, meet the morning clients and do the initial training session of at least 20 newcomers.  It’s been a full-on initiation and I’m thankful to Carl, the previous instructor, for allowing me to work alongside him a  few weeks previously and for reminding me of nuances of the human body and how to recognise instantly when clients are out of position so that they can be corrected.

Correcting clients position on the machines is a major part of my job.  As I instruct new clients I stay with them throughout their session ensuring their positions are perfect so that the vibrations target the muscles correctly.  I get to insult or cajole them for poor effort reminding them that the name over the door is “Vibra-Train” not “Vibra-Massage”.  The Studio environment is sharp and charged with wit as clients also harangue each other, demanding correct position and encouraging each to complete the regular 60 to 120 seconds position times.

Other clients know the Safety Program well and work through their session without needing help but I’m always watching, alert to any variances they’ve made over time, any body part or limb angle out of position, and quick to correct them.  In fact we’ve had an all-out crackdown checking all clients positions.  The machine vibrations are set at 43hz with 3mm amplitude.  These machines give vertical vibration – the client being thrust upward and landing back on the platform 43 times a second so self correcting to remain in perfect position is all important.

During a few quiet periods I’ve done a full “Spring-Clean” of the studio and it’s looking great.  Also involved in the forums on vibration training so I’ve been very busy.

And the best thing is I Love It! More reports to come – watch this space.

Sal Marinello has an agenda

March 17th, 2009

Quote from Sal Marinello:

my agenda is crystal clear…avoid snake oil – especially in the form of multi-thousand dollar machines for which there is no proof of efficacy, and avoid snake oil salesmen/charlatans who want people to believe that the ONLY way to improve their fitness level is to spend money on an expensive gadget.

He is, of course, talking about Whole Body Vibration Machines. His comment is taken from a series of articles entitled: The Healthy Skeptic.  Sal Marinello is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and Certified Personal Trainer (U.S.A.), Weightlifting Coach, Trainer of  trainers, who gives radio talks on ESPN and Fox Sports Radio? Is this the type of generalised warning the public wants from someone whose opinion is respected?  Did he also give this warning on Sports radio?  The warning sounds profound, doesn’t it, and it’s effect has likely been to scare off the very people that Whole Body Vibration helps best – Joe and Jane  Young American couple,  Mrs Overweight Smith,  Mr Torn Knee Cartilage Jones,  Mike (My Body is the Best and Chicks love me) Brown, Johnny (in a wheelchair) White – oh, hold on, that’s all sorts of people!

This warning is from a man who has NEVER used a Sports level (or even a quality home level) Vibration Machine.  His harangues were written before he trialled any machine and when he did, he chose to trial a Soloflex – a gym stepper platform with a tiny $20 motor attached by tape to the underside.  What was he afraid of – that a real sports machine might kick his butt?

Let’s look at what Sal says: There’s some validity to his claim that Vibration Training and Vibration Therapy do not have scientifically proven results.  This is a new industry and studies have been flawed, often being financed by the company benefiting most from a positive outcome rather than an independent study.  There have been good results  but more controlled studies are needed.   Lloyd Shaw, founder of Vibra-Train and spokesperson for the International Vibration Training Regulating Body (IVTRB) responded to Sal Marinello’s claims by saying, I do not believe Sal is stupid enough to think all platforms perform the same function, as he has tried to imply by putting all research results under the term “WBV”.  It would be of a more logical conclusion that he is doing his best to mislead the public to back up his previous statements”. Those statements include calling people in the Vibration Training Industry “hucksters”, equating Vibration Training with Subway travel and Jackhammer work, and in doing so, saying it can’t possibly work.  It’s my opinion that anyone who can use the Google search engine will find simple explanations of the difference between Vibration Training and Industrial and Travel vibration.

My opinion also is  that Sal has deliberately set out to mislead the public. My question is why?  Surely his Personal Training business isn’t financially threatened by his clients using Vibration Machines to complement and enhance their training?  Sal seems to like Kettle Bells and promotes walking and stretching to people who want to improve fitness, tone up, lose weight. I agree, those activities are beneficial but many people can’t or wont do them.  These  people Vibration Training CAN help, especially those who need a boost to get them started and are maybe too obese to want to walk far.  And, of course, many Sports trained people, like Rugby Players, Wrestlers, Body Sculpters do Vibration Training on a regular basis and testify to the gains they achieve.   Sal Marinello calls this “anecdotal evidence” and so it is but that’s how good news gets out!

And lastly Sal’s concern about the price of Vibration machines and Training; I consider that a compliment especially as each time he complains I get to point out the cost of a Vibra-Train Studio visit is around US$7 (much less than gym fees and personal training!) and yes, good quality machines do cost a lot of money, being made with solid steel and longlife motors, I wouldn’t trust any machine made to lesser specs.

Visit to Melbourne

February 17th, 2009

melbourne1I spent the weekend in Melbourne with my son, Brad, and enjoyed a little sightseeing and visiting friends.  It was a rather subdued experience with news of bushfire casualties and damage still being updated but the response to helping survivors there is fantastic.

We took a 60km train trip and later heard of a minor fire in an area we passed through so the danger is ongoing. The ground is dry, trees are oily (so they burn easily) and the temperature is hot with a dry wind.

While there I visited a Vibration Studio just outside of Melbourne CBD. The studio had Vibro-gym machines and I did a gentle workout.  Still having pain in both shoulders and arms I was very careful to have the machine set low.  I found it hard to hold correct position with sore arms and It was my first real workout on a lineal machine in almost a month.
(Note: In Auckland I’ve been so fortunate to have been using a wonderful, newly designed, big, pivotal, therapy-machine with vibrating side handlebars to relieve muscle tightness in my shoulders and arms and help keep my legs and core stable while I recover).

The Melbourne Studio was busy with people who looked like athletes, doing regular poses with extra positions and some dynamic work. It differed from my regular studio by the machine brand and program.

I expect to go back again later in the year and as I know there are two other central city Vibration Studios I want to visit them also. Melbourne is a bustling city with a central shopping and business district visited by many thousands of people daily including at the weekends.  There are performance areas where street performers are welcomed and large theatres and performance stages.  The people are friendly and there’s a great community spirit .  In the central city area of Melbourne there is huge scope for more Vibration Training  Studios.  In the suburbs even more so.
