What about people with disabilities?

October 13th, 2009

What about the elderly? Do I really have to do a push-up?

Can obese person use a vibration machine? It’s hard exercise, right?

What about health problems like M.S, Diabetes, Asthma, and High Blood Pressure?

The phone rings at the Vibra-Train studio and these are among the questions asked.   It seems amazing that people with the conditions I’ve listed can do hard; strength building exercise on a Vibration Platform so how is it possible?

Firstly, people with disabilities: It depends on what brand or type of machine they have access to and they must be diligent to make sure the vibration training/vibration therapy they get is going to be safe and effective.   Lloyd Shaw, the owner and designer of Vibra-Train is always happy to be emailed or called for advice.  I am also happy to take emails and if I don’t know the answer to your question, I will find out and always get back to you.  I’ve trained people with varying disabilities, including missing limbs, and those with medical conditions and it’s exciting to see the good results we get.

Older people come into the Vibra-Train studio where I work and they use the machine that has side handlebars so that they are well supported in the squat positions.  This machine is a little lower to the ground than the other machines so it’s also easier to step onto and again to step off.  It’s important to move slowly and carefully around the machines including when kneeling and getting up again.

And the push-up? Yes older people can do the push-up position.  It’s not as scary as it sounds as there’s no up and down movements but simply holding a push-up position while the machine does the work.  If customers, of any age, are uncomfortable kneeling we have an alternative standing push-up position, again, using the platform that has side handlebars.

Pivotal Vibration Machines…
Many of these can be bought for home use; can be a useful aid for older people but it’s essential to check out machine reviews first though to ensure you are buying a suitable, premium quality product.  This type of vibration, which has a see-saw movement, helps with mobility and reduces lower back pain by gently (beware: only if it’s a high quality machine) relaxing the pelvic region including the hips and lower back.

Obese people can most definitely use a vibration machine.  The Vibra-Train brand was designed for you! This brand of machine has bio-mechanical markers (exact and obvious places to put feet, hands, knees etc) and while these markers are for everyone, they make it so much easier for bigger people to get into perfect position and to hold that position for the 60 seconds required.  Other machine brands can also be used, of course.  I recommend asking questions about the machine and to ensure you get an instructor who is competent to help you.

Contra-indications…
There are very few contra-indications to vibration training; the primary ones being pregnancy, having an active cancer condition, and having a heart pace-maker.  Other health concerns including diabetes and high blood pressure are not contra-indications but it’s important to be honest on your first visit, filling out the Introduction and Health questionnaire accurately so that the Instructor is aware of your medical condition and can give any special instructions needed.   Injuries are rarely a problem and when noted on the questionnaire allow the Instructor to pay special attention to that area ensuring you get excellent training that also aids in recovery of the injury.

A FINAL CAUTIONARY NOTE:  With any exercise facility be it a gym, fitness club, or vibration training studio you must be sure that the equipment provided, the program of exercise positions, and the instruction given is excellent in quality and designed for the purpose of giving you, the customer, an ongoing work-out experience that gives great results and does no harm.  The proficiency of the Instructor is essential to ensuring you get a great first experience and ongoing supervised training.  Ask lots of questions.

Into the Snow – Skiing and Snowboarding

August 27th, 2009

Last weekend I spent in Christchurch,  which is a major city in the South Island of New Zealand.  It’s a city with a heart, having lots of activities and fun available right in the city centre each weekend.  There was a huge igloo shape sitting in The Square.  Inside was an ice-rink providing fun for young and old.

Porter Heights-1It wasn’t enough for my son and me though.  Flying in with an early morning arrival time we picked up a pre-booked rental car and headed for the mountains.  Hoping to ski at Mt Hutt we were a little disappointed when looking up snow conditions on my son’s new Google phone we read that Mt Hutt was closed due to inclement weather.  Porter Heights was open so hoping it would remain so we drove on.

The long winding unsealed road up the mountainside was a little scary to drive but once at the snow base area the sight was amazing.  Soft powder everywhere; moderate temperature and as this was a club ski field only recently turned commercial there was very few people.  Numbers increased during the day but friendliness and consideration of other skiers and boarders regardless of their ability was apparent.

kea on carKea, New Zealand alpine parrot, were interesting to watch.  They are curious, intelligent birds who have almost no fear of humans so they sit on your car pecking at edges of paintwork or rubber, or demolishing your windscreen wipers right before your eyes.  I was told they have a habit of rolling stones down the iron roof of mountain huts and so keeping trampers awake at nights.

Still recovering from flu/chest infection I didn’t really enjoy my ski lesson but I had a wonderful time watching others especially my son, Brad, who skis with such a natural talent he looks as though he was born with skis attached.

This website is all about Vibration Training and so you might wonder why I am writing of my time in the snow – » Read more: Into the Snow – Skiing and Snowboarding

What do I need to do to get the Best Results Possible?

August 5th, 2009

Customers have varying expectations for results from their vibration training sessions.  Some want generally improved fitness so they have the stamina and strength for everyday life.  Others use vibration training as an essential part of their sports or fitness training program.  Still others want to see fat-loss and maybe to have a bikini body by next summer.  And there are other motivations as well.

dreamstime_8762818 Upward ArrowRegardless of the reasons for coming to Vibra-Train there’s a secondary motive that makes a difference to results attained.  That motive is basically how much the person is prepared to push themselves (how much effort they will make) and how compliant they are to instructions.

As I’ve written in previous articles getting into and remaining in Perfect Position is non-negotiable.  We have ways to make it simpler for customers who really have difficulty and for those who just wont do it right, they also have to take those options.  The alternative positions, if you can call them that » Read more: What do I need to do to get the Best Results Possible?

How Soon will I see Results

August 5th, 2009

Abstract 3D Hourglass

This is a comonly asked question.  In fact it’s often one of the first questions people ask when they come for their first Vibra-Train session.

The answer depends on a few factors.

The first and main determining factor is the machine that will be used.  Then next is the program.  But let’s step back a little; It’s important to ask the customer what results they want to see.  Only then can I give an honest answer.  A very overweight guy who wants to see a six-pack by next week is simply dreaming!  Likewise the runner who’s worn her body down with overtraining and wants to regain fitness before her next event, two weeks hence.  She will see some improvement but there’s no miracle cure.

Now back to the machine being used. For muscle growth to take place the customer must use a high energy, lineal machine.  Other results are possible » Read more: How Soon will I see Results

Balancing Hormones 3 – Libido

July 14th, 2009

I was asked if Vibration Training could lift a woman’s libido.

It’s a good question and the simple answer is Yes but of course there’s so much more involved.  There are so many reasons that women avoid sexual involvement and some of these reasons will not be solved by a simple “shake-up” on a vibration machine a few times each week.  It would be every man’s dream come true if it were so and I’m sure we ladies could easily get our partners to pay for our Vibration Training costs as they would benefit greatly.

Leaving aside emotional and psychological reasons for loss of libido, we have physical and mental tiredness which has many causes.  Even just “life”, the ongoing daily demands that can bring on fatigue and loss of energy, can cause loss of interest in sexual activity especially if it is seen as another “chore” at the end of a busy day rather than a time of mutual pleasure and refreshment.  This is where exercise and taking time out for oneself can help.

dreamstimefree_407008I’ve only had one woman tell me she has increased libido since she came to Vibra-Train but it’s not exactly a topic of regular conversation in the studio in the mornings, unlike the afternoons when there is a  male instructor and the conversation is often about libidinous, sensual desires.  » Read more: Balancing Hormones 3 – Libido

Balancing Hormones 1 – Pregnant at Last!

July 10th, 2009

bullet basic squatOne of the benefits that vibration training providers talk about is that it balances out your hormones.  They talk about increased serotonin (gives a happy, satisfied feeling after training and can aid with restful sleep), increases in Human Growth Hormone and more.  This all sounds wonderful, maybe; really most people have no idea what the salesperson is going on about and are reticent to ask.  You can try asking but unless you are talking to someone who is there to do more than just sell you a machine you’ll just get more sales talk with figures or percentages thrown at you.

So let’s see if we can do better here and get a little understanding of  what “Balancing your Hormones” means.

Firstly a qualifier; you must be using a high quality platform to get the benefits that are so readily touted by marketers of vibration machines.  Please refer to my other articles to read about finding a quality Studio or Buying a machine for home use.

It might be that the title of this article caught your attention and you’ve read this far without any mention of pregnancy so here it is:

Becoming pregnant when otherwise it hasn’t happened is not a benefit that marketers will tell you about.  For one thing it might scare people away!  Can you imagine the local health authorities insisting that machines be labelled, “Ensure adequate contraceptive measures are taken when using machines”.

All laughter aside, there have been a number of reports of women becoming pregnant within weeks of starting vibration training.  What’s so amazing about this is that the women who report this tell us they have been trying for years and some have had other interventions that haven’t worked.  It seems that the vibrations act as an “unblocker”, possibly clearing blocked fallopian tubes which allows for greater egg mobility.  Thinking about it the vibrations might also encourage maturity and release of the egg from the sac on the surface of the ovary.  An interesting unrelated point is that photography has recently shown that the release of the egg isn’t instantaneous as was thought but it takes around 15 minutes to emerge from it’s fluid filled sac.

For now it’s just conjecture on how vibration training aids the possibilty of pregnancy.  Customers of Vibra-Train and otherstudios attest that it does!

It’s cold today and still the customers come in

July 9th, 2009

It’s very cold today and even in the studio I’m finding it hard to stay warm. Customers seem to arrive in groups with quiet times inbetween and today, I’m rather unmotivated in the quieter periods although I have cleaned the studio. The small amount of cold air that comes under the glass doors keeps chilling me and I’m looking forward to taking a walk in the sunshine after lunch.

The cold has not stopped regular customers from coming in though and even the elderly priest who comes in twice a week has driven across town to do his Vibra-Train session. I’ve noticed a big improvement in his abilities over the past three months. Not only is holding better position when using the Vibra-Train machine, his mental capacity has improved and he’s brighter, and now remembers the order of the program. I make sure he’s in perfect position for each of the 60 second poses and then at the end of the program he holds a 3 minute “ski-the-slopes” position. The wall chart states 2 minutes for this final position and many people only manage 1 minute but our infamous studio priest puts many of the younger, stronger customers to shame by holding excellent position throughout a whole 180 seconds.

Father D. is a man of average to solid build, in his 80′s and he’s an inspiration to other studio customers. At an age when some would be resting all day he still attends to parish duties and keeps fit with regular vibration training sessions. He’s also proof that vibration training on high energy lineal machines is effective for all ages. He never misses his sessions.

I know it all now – yeah right!

July 1st, 2009

dreamstimefree_698447In New Zealand we have a saying – It’s “Yeah Right!” It means “No, I do not agree!” and it’s used in a humorous or satirical manner.   A favourite of mine is when students tell their teachers, “I’ve been studying all summer”.  The repy is, “Yeah Right!”  Or when your partner says, “of course I’ll clean up the flat” when you know he’s going to be watching the match on TV all afternoon.  We laugh and say, “Yeah Right!”  New Zealand’s Tui Breweries has run a very sucessful billboard campaign using the “Yeah Right” slogan.

So, of course, the title of this article is a joke!

I’ve been reminded this week of how little I actually know; how much there still is to learn.  I’ve learnt how to put customers through the Safety Program correctly, making sure they get into perfect position and correct as necessary so they stay in position and get all the benefits the training gives.  I’ve updated the knowledge needed to assess a new customers needs based on their answers to medical and injury questions on the Health Screen they complete when they first come into the studio.  I’ve worked with customers to achieve great results ranging from fat-loss and fitness gains to injury recovery, core strength and more.

Yet each day I come across a situation I am tested in.  A customer with knee pain, a customer who feels faint during the program, children who find it difficult to play quietly and instead try to run about the studio; these are the simple conditions I deal with each day.  The more difficult ones like medical conditions that might affect how a customer copes with the vibration training program or how they are affected afterwards, things like auto-immune conditions, then I am able to ask for help from Lloyd Shaw, who is my boss and the owner and developer of the Vibra-Train brand of machines.  All the Vibra-Train studios have the same access to help and even other brands of vibration machine owners call from all around the world to get advice in specific situations.

I haven’t lost weight.. but

June 17th, 2009

Many of the women who come into the Vibra-Train studio where I work mornings list weightloss as one of their goals.

dreamstimefree_49575011For some it’s the first question they ask me, “Will I lose weight?” I explain, yes, but I think what they really want to lose is fat.  It’s very important to explain that they might not actually lose weight in the first few weeks of their vibration training sessions.  I tell them they will lose some fat and gain some muscle so weighing themself is not an accurate measure of what’s happening.  It is even possible that by working-out hard they might even gain a little weight at first which can be a bit off-putting unless they understand what is really happening.

Lloyd Shaw, owner of Vibra-Train, tells customers to look in the mirror without clothes on, first thing in the morning.  Morning is important as any swelling, fluid retention and hormonal issues will have settled overnight.  Then in three weeks time (about 10 – 12 vibration training sessions) they should look in the mirror again and they will see some shape change.  I think they don’t even need to look again to know they’ve lost fat as they tell me their jeans have become loose or their belt has had to be tightened.  Women also tend to lose size from their bust which is a very good excuse for a fun shopping afternoon with girlfriends.

Some customers get concerned that the scales are still saying they weigh exactly the same as when they started or so little loss as to be inconsequential but when they do look into the mirror again they see how their body has toned up.  They notice the areas fat has gone from, often their belly and their buttocks.  Sometimes they notice increased muscle definition but most women aren’t really interested in this.

A few customers have said they’ve changed their diet and cut out “bad” foods and they attribute their changed shape to this but it can’t be true when they haven’t lost weight?  Eating healthier foods or changing one’s diet is important but it’s my opinion that it’s better to leave diet alone and increase exercise for at least the first two weeks of any weightloss/fatloss program.  Exercise increases metabolism (the rate of calorie burn) and that’s enough.  In fact severely reducing calorie intake is counterproductive as the body reacts to this starvation by holding onto fat and even by storing more fat around the internal organs.

After a few weeks of exercise weightloss usually begins.  This is the time to look at diet.  One visit to a qualified dietician can be helpful or simply following a balanced eating plan.  I don’t personally like restrictive diets so I avoid discussion about them, instead telling customers to eat protein after exercise.  This helps with healing and muscle repair and of course if one has eaten protein they are less likely to crave sweet foods and carbohydrate treats.

I’ve seen some good changes in customers who have come in seeking weightloss and toning.  It’s a prvilege to be a small part in their success.

Does Vibration Training really work for women?

June 15th, 2009

Wow, what a loaded question!

I answer with, what results do you want to see?

It’s all to easy to answer such a generalised question with: Of course it works! You’ll lose weight and get stronger in no time at all.

One of the lessons I learnt when I first worked in a Fitness Facility was, never, ever guess what results a person wants or expects from their program.  Never look at a person who’s overweight and assume that’s the area they want results.  It might be that they are okay with their size and really want to improve their core stability or just get rid of back pain.  A common answer to the question, “what are your goals and what results do you want to see?” is “I just want to feel better, not so tired all the time”.  Telling that person that they need to lose weight would offend and they’d probably never come back.

Vibration Training on high force, high quality platforms offers so many benefits and that’s the reason I am so passionate about it.  I don’t have to hype up an answer to any question I am asked; there’s so much I can honestly say.

Slim girl in big size jeansWhen asked about weight-loss I prefer to say that vibration training has great toning effects.  It’s intense though short sessions cause the body to use up large amounts of energy.  It definitely feels like exercise and leaves the user tired but with a great, after-exercise “buzz”.  After about 3 weeks (maybe 10 sessions) women see results; the bathroom mirror becomes a friend rather than enemy as a sideways glance shows shape changes.  I’ve had customers complain that their expensive designer jeans no longer fit well yet the scales aren’t showing any major weightloss yet.  For me, that’s the most exciting time; being able to say that a customer has gained muscle and so has gained strength, improved their overall fitness, looks brighter, feels better and the list goes on.

Did I say they are also maintaining or gently improving their bone density and ridding their body of toxins due to the increased blood supply and all that vibration thinning out and squeezing some fluid from cells where it’s been lying stagnant for who know how long.  And balancing out their homones; but that will keep for another blog.
