This post is going to be short – the picture says it all!

Lloyd Shaw - Vibra-Train - February 2012

For about five years I’ve watched Lloyd Shaw follow the IVTRB Safety Program on Vibra-Train brand vibration machines – three times a week, every week. Well not quite, there’s been a few times he’s taken a break, just a week off, usually just one or two sessions. A short amount of time off any exercise training program is good, it allows the body to completely rest and still growth and gain continues.

I’ve posted a few pics of Lloyd in previous articles, Click here to see them .

Lloyd’s been following the Safety program for six years now. If you clicked through to the older pics you”ll see that Lloyd has lost size – he no longer carries the bulk he had a year ago. This is an interesting change, he still eats burgers but I think he’s been a little more careful with food quality lately. I rarely see the pizza delivery man at the studio now. Nothing else has changed; Lloyd still eats when he’s hungry – and that’s an important point, he doesn’t overeat. He also doesn’t take supplements or steroids (never has). His protein intake is increased by a serving of pure pasteurized eggwhite (Eggcel) most days along with a few Vitamin C tablets and some Magnesium. He maintains a healthy gut and elimination with a spoonful of a fibre mix.

And this is the result, a slimmer, healthy body, with excellent muscle definition. Body Composition Analysis Machine test results put Lloyd in the highest category for muscle quality. His body fat level absolutely normal, right on the line.

When I think of the owners and marketers of many of the well known vibration machine brands I sometimes wonder what sort of results they are personally getting – from vibration training alone (its the only exercise Lloyd Shaw does).

I could name many who are young to mid aged guys. My challenge is – show us what you’ve got, show us a picture and tell us your program.

Lloyd Shaw’s program – click through to YouTube

New Zealand is recovering from “Rugby Fever”. We hosted the Rugby World Cup and there were matches every weekend for over a month and some during the week also. And we won!

New Zealanders and our many visitors from all over the world have been glued to their seats at match venues around the country or at their homes or local bar and eatery, rising only to star jump in adoration at a try or to yell at their team, pleading with them to win. Its funny watching our men screaming at their TV sets almost believing the players can hear them and respond by beating their opposition.

And then there’s drinks time – we celebrate with drinks, frequently alcoholic – and food, or we commiserate if we lose; that’s done with drinks and food also.

True exercise time over the rugby weekends has been minimal for most people. Sure, some took taken the fan trail to their match venue, a 4km long walk and a very good way to avoid the push and shove of crowds scrambling to get aboard the trains but ambling along with a drink in hand does not count as exercise.

NOW, it’s time to get back to real life and real exercise!

The past week has been very busy – customers I haven’t seen for weeks have come back in, many complaining of how much weight they’ve put on or how unfit they are feeling. The weather has turned warmer; we are all thinking that Summer has arrived at last, and so it really is “exercise time”

Customers have been asking me how they can optimise their sessions to get fast results. The real answer is they shouldn’t have stopped coming – consistancy is the best way to maintain and improve fitness but okay, so you’ve slacked off, what to do now -

Firstly, make sure a trainer watches you as you get back into the program. If you are using a machine at home get someone to check your positions are perfect and work through the full IVTRB Safety Program carefully – following the step by step instructions.

Perfect Positions held for the full time (60 seconds for most poses) = The Best Results

Secondly, make your sessions a priority in your week. Write them into your calendar if you need to and try not to miss a session. Buy a monthly concession, pay for your sessions up front. Whatever you need to do to ensure you turn up for the sessions – Do It! Making sure you train every second day/ 3 times a week ensures your body responds well.

Eat well, don’t skip meals. We don’t recommend any special diet plans, just sensible eating – that means going easy on the chocolate muffins and having them only as a special treat. It is important to eat before you train – a banana is good, it elevates your blood sugar and provides the energy you need. Ensure you have had enough to drink, especially if your session is later in the day. And after training its good to drink water and to have some additional protein at your next meal.

Within a few sessions you’ll be back on track with good results again very quickly.

I started writing this article on a flight; returning from an extended weekend in Sydney, Australia visiting my son. We went to several large shopping malls and indulged in lots of shopping as it was Sales time.

Taking a train to Parramatta, an hour trip out of Central Sydney I’d barely begun my degradation into sales mode when I saw a stand in the walkway with a guy selling exercise equipment. My son, Brad, pointed out a vibration machine so I walked over to see what type it was. The salesman asked me if I was interested and had I used one before. He was a really nice guy so I wasn’t going to let him do a sales talk, I told him right away that I worked as an instructor with high energy lineal machines. He actually seemed relieved and asked me to tell him about them as he’d only recently learnt that there were others than the type he was selling.

We talked for about an hour, a time really well spent as this salesman who could have insisted his machine did everything that anyone could want or need, instead wanted to be educated. He even asked about the machine he was selling which was a home machine, quite expensive (but aren’t they all). It was a low speed pivotal (side to side motion) and definitely not the worst I’ve trialled. The sales guy said he was using the machine at home and wanted to know how to use it effectively to get the best results possible. He could see the possibilities of Vibration Training for fitness and weight-loss but no one had even told him how to use the machines he was supposed to be selling.

The salesman was a bit overweight so I first pointed out that the machine was barely coping and he’d do better on a higher quality machine. We then went on to talk about poses that can be used. (there was a poster on the wall with about 30 positions many of which were a bit like yoga and totally impossible and impractical for either me or the guy to attempt). I went through the IVTRB Safety program with him, using the pivotal version and we discussed the speeds/frequencies to set the machine for each pose. I was able to actively demonstrate most of them.

We then used my son’s large screen cellphone to watch the YouTube video of Lloyd Shaw’s work-out – again it’s the IVTRB Safety Program but with a few extra poses, using the Vibra-Train lineal machine with side vibrating handlebars. David, the sales guy, was getting excited and then watching the Full Body Triceps Dip position using side handlebars he realised there was no way to translate this to anything that could be done on his machine. He now wants a Vibra-Train brand Lineal machine. We even had a talk about how Vibra-Train now lease machines for commercial use. I really felt a little sorry for him – he saw what was possible and now he wants it and I’m sure he went home that night to talk to his wife about a trip to Auckland to try out the whole program.

I continued with my shopping but I’d lost interest; instead I was “buzzing”, excited that I’d been able to help someone learn a little more about vibration machines and how to use them. And very happy to have met a salesman who, instead of pretending he already “knew it all” wanted to extend his knowledge.

Does your Gym or Fitness Centre have a Vibration Machine in the corner or in a side room but you don’t know how to use it?

Does it have a chart on the wall with stick figures in many strange poses? Are the trainers clueless when it comes to this piece of equipment?

Do you want to know how to use your home machine safely and effectively?

(many come with long, confusing workout suggestions written in broken english or just pictures with instruction in chinese languages)

Did you buy a machine on Ebay or New Zealand’s TradeMe and you don’t really know how to use it?

Here is a poster and link to clear instructions on the use of Lineal Vibration Machines. It is designed for medium and higher energy platforms like VibroGym, BodyShaker, DKN Lineal platforms, and Power Plate clones BUT it’s also effective with low energy home machines of the sort you can buy in a sports or general supply shop or online.

If you are using a lower force machine, once you’ve mastered the program and are making sure you are getting into and maintaining Perfect Position you can double up on the squats and later on the full program. Doubling up on a pose can be performing it for 2 minutes instead of 1 or doing two sets of 1 minute poses dependant on the timing controls available on the machine.

Be sure your machine is lineal (upright vibration) before following these instructions although most positions can be adapted for pivotal (side to side) machines.

Note: Do not attempt the plank position in these instructions on a pivotal platform. Full instructions for the safe use of pivotal vibration machines will be available very soon.

IVTRB Safety Program Step-by-Step instructions: Click here for instructions and explanation of each position.

And here’s the poster. If you click on it, it links through to a larger copy.

It is essential to follow the instructions in conjunction with the poster. By carefully going through it step-by-step you can be sure of getting into position correctly and having an effective workout.
Do not ever simply try to copy the poster!

Picture 1: shows Lloyd Shaw in 2004. Back then he loved his gym workouts – 1 and 1/2 hour sessions six days a week. Add in cardio sessions three times a week also, sprints and swimming.

He looks good but decidedly chubby. His muscle definition was better than the average gym goer but there’s no way he would take off his shirt and pose back then. And look at his arms; there’s muscle there but they have a covering of fat.

.

Lloyd Shaw Vibra-Train

Picture 2: Two years into a self test, using only Vibra-Train brand machines and the Vibra-Train Safety Program for workouts; this picture shows a very cut look. It was taken on impulse and looked so good the background was added for use as a poster. Lloyd’s only gym visits were once every few months to check out his strength which was increasing.

.

Picture 3: Fast forward to 2011. The picture below of Lloyd Shaw taken April 7th, 2011 – a slimmer profile showing amazing abs and a completely balanced look.

Lloyd Shaw Vibration Training Muscles April 2011

The picture is completely unedited and was taken on a whim. I thought it was so good I had to publish it.

It’s now 5 years since Lloyd Shaw began his “Vibra-Train as only exercise” test using himself as the test subject. This look was achieved solely using Vibra-Train brand Vibration Machines. I know Lloyd well and can attest that his diet isn’t always great (too much fastfood) although he has cleaned it up somewhat this year.

Individual results vary of course; some people are badly hampered by hormonal or overweight/fat issues, stress or injury. Some people respond very quickly to this form of exercise while for others their body goes through other changes first but for everyone results begin to show after just a few weeks and are ongoing.

My posts have been infrequent for a few months as I’ve had some health ups and downs. A small operation in late May went wrong and I received what is now politely called a “Treatment Injury”. Basically it means someone stuffed up! This resulted in a more extensive surgery early June, a long period of recovery and a lot of pain. I’m left with some internal injuries still and expect to have more surgery again quite soon to complete my treatment.

What has this meant for me? Have I been able to vibra train? What about my fitness? What about my weight, has it zoomed upward?

After any big operation there’s a recovery time during which exercise is generally limited to short walks and no lifting or stretching. I had no choice with that but after a few weeks I was eager to regain my strength so I visited my workplace and was allowed to sit on a chair in front of the Vibration Machine with my feet resting just on the edge of a rubber mat on the platform, my legs bent at about 110 degree angle at the knees. The machine was turned on for three minutes.

This position requires zero effort and gently increases blood circulation so you feel quite awake. It can even stimulate some small amount of muscle contraction in the legs and buttocks. Obviously that’s all good for healing but a lot of care is needed even with this minimal effort position and one person will respond differently to another. It’s unusual but I found It gave me a discomfort in the pelvic region where I’d had surgery and I had to wait a few more weeks.

By then I was wanting to get back onto the machines and do some real training – Again I had to be guided by my healing progress. Using 3 layers of rubber mat on the machine platform I was able to do the special “ski the slopes” position. It was great for me as by using the side vibrating handlebars (only on Vibra-Train brand machines) I was able to get an upper body workout while gently working out my lower body; cutting the amount of vibration by using the mats on the platform and by using arm pressure, pushing down on the handlebars with my hands, to take pressure off my legs and pelvic area.

I continued doing only the “ski the slopes” position for 60 seconds, firstly just once, then three times, then up to six times using the lowest force machine in the Vibra-Train studio. Three times a week, just like regular training, I continued this regime for a month and then added in a few other poses. I lessened the mats under my feet from three down to two and over the next weeks progressed to the full Safety Program.

The process seemed slow and as I’m a Vibration Training Instructor I wanted to get back onto the machines very quickly BUT my healing and safety comes first.

It’s taken over three months to get back to strength and full healing and now I am fit it’s a bit sad that I have to face the process all over again but “cest la vie”.

I feel very fortunate to be working with the world’s best Vibration Training Machines here at Vibra-Train, Auckland City.

Spring in New Zealand? Well not yet but the past few mornings have been a little warmer. Auckland is known for having “four seasons in one day” and almost every day during winter we experience rain; which can be torrential or simply annoying showers. Now, in August we are looking forward to Spring, a time of warmer temperatures, days with sunny skies, rain with gale force winds (not so exciting to look forward to) and maybe weekends away at the mountains which will hold their snow for a few more months.

We’ve had many first-timers at the Vibra-Train studio where I work. I’m wondering if people are looking forward to summer and know that now is the time to improve their fitness and strength; and look great.

Last week’s customers all had questions about Vibration Training or they had specific desires, several wanting to only work out their upper body, telling me that they did a lot of running and that was all they thought they needed for their legs.

These customers are “the best” – they haven’t just come along because they’ve seen an TV advert for Vibration Training or an article in a magazine and come to try us out for a few visits, kind of like trying the latest flavour of icecream and then off to try some other fitness facility – they’ve come because they’ve already done some research or talked to a friend who’s getting great results – these are serious, long-term, new customers and they want their questions answered.

Those who are regularly walking or running need to understand how different Vibration Training is; how training on high-force, lineal machines builds muscle and is considered a form of resistance training whereas running is for cardio fitness. They soon realise that despite frequent running they must follow the full Safety Program to get the results. If they vibration train regularly two or three times a week they soon be telling me how much easier their running is becoming because they’ll have increased their overall fitness; those who sprint get faster and those who walk or run longer distances find they have more stamina and don’t tire so soon. An advantage runners and regular walkers have over other “newbies” is that their leg muscles are strong so they manage the squat positions very well.

In my last post I reported having many new customers coming into the Vibra-Train studio where I work. This can make my day very exciting and also challenging as I instruct these new users and put them through The Safety Program, introducing them to safe and effective Pure Vibration Training and answering any questions they have. I like to leave them with a great impression of what training on high-force, lineal machines can do for them – increasing their fitness and toning their body, along with strength increases and maybe fat-loss and much more, depending on what the person needs. The benefits are too many to list in one sentence!

We often talk about the different machine types and brands available and the Vibra-Train difference.

I worked on Sunday, and two new customers had specific back injuries that required me to make decisions about their ability to follow the standard safety program. I have the option of giving them fully assisted (side vibrating handlebars) squats so that their lower back, hips, knees and ankles have even more support and allowing them work through the whole program; or, if necessary, they can do only the side handlebar assisted squats, that’s if their medical condition or severity of injury suggests they will be unable to do the regular program.

I have to make the choice. I’ve gained experience in this and I can always refer back to Lloyd Shaw, the owner of Vibra-Train if I am really unsure but he expects me to be competent in this by now. Sometimes I wait and and then decide from how well they handle Position 1 – The Basic Squat – getting them to use the side handlebars instead of front ones, but even before that very first first position, I’ll be thinking and deciding as they’ve filled in a questionaire and we’ll have discussed their health or injury concerns.

Confidence is the thing - I can make the right decisions for these customers. I can decide if they can follow a Training program or is they need to start with Vibration Therapy. It’s really not hard to decide! I err on the side of caution but I don’t want to send a customer away disappointed because they could have done more.

So, yesterday’s customers – one had a severe lower back problem and had expected to have surgery but was declined by our national accident insurance system. Despite her injury being the result of an accident there was an element of degenerative plus overuse issues. She was hoping her private medical insurance would help pay for the needed surgery and told me she was currently unable to lift up and carry her 18 month old toddler. It was quickly obvious that she was not able to work through the full program so she did a simple set of side handlebar assisted squats and will come back in few days to tell us how she felt afterwards and then we may increase what she does – She did Vibration Therapy.

The other customer with lower back and knee pain arrived later in the day. Her injuries resulted from years of working in childcare squatting on the floor while she played with children and picking them up from the ground. I thought she would be able to do the full Safety Program using the side handlebars for support in the squat positions. Then as my boss walked into the studio I decided to ask his advice. Lloyd (my boss) took over and put the customer through the program and I observed. She did the full program – Vibration Training. I noticed she was putting her body weight onto her toes not balanced onto heels and toes. This was what was causing her back and knee pain as it was the way she regularly squatted down when playing with young children. Lloyd pointed this out to her and told her how much she would benefit from the Vibra-Train Safety Program; with an instructor supervising her sessions she would quickly learn to keep her heels down and take the pressure off her knees, also keeping her back neutral and relaxed.

I love it when I see Vibration Training giving such benefits that will change a young person’s life so dramatically. I’m excited to be able to watch this new customer’s progress.

I work in a Vibra-Train Studio. It’s Pure Vibration Training at it’s best – a much higher force way of Acceleration Training or Power Plate.

We use a Safety Program specifically designed to give a safe workout with excellent results. Customers are fully supervised and quickly learn the steps to get into and maintain perfect position on the machines. Over time, however, people tend to cheat a little, usually unintentionally, and their body moves slightly out of position making the workout easier (and less effective) so I still have to watch them.

Early this morning I had many regular customers in the studio; ones that I don’t have to watch too closely. One couple come regularly every Monday and Thursday morning on their way to their office. They started at another Vibra-Train studio five years ago and have been coming into the Auckland City Studio for about a year so they know the program very well, so well they could just about do my job and instruct others BUT this morning I, foolishly, left them alone for a few minutes while I cleared rubbish bins in another part of the studio.

Walking back into the room I laughed as I saw them both struggling with a position that involves having a mat on the platform while doing the position. They had both chosen the wrong mat; one that fits our larger, “Bullet” machine platform so it overhung the “Vibra” machine platforms they were using. I asked them to look at the platforms and the mats and both said, “the mat doesn’t fit; it was hard to hold position”. They still didn’t realise they’d done anything wrong yet they had both walked accross the studio and taken mats from beside another machine instead of using the ones right by them, ones that perfectly fit the “Vibra” platforms they were using.

Maybe they’d had a busy weekend and had Monday-itis!

I was looking at the search terms that led people to my website. One of these was the question, “Can you use Vibra-Train in pregnancy?”

The answer is No, we don’t allow pregnant ladies to train at Vibra-Train. We also don’t recommend using your home machine, of any type or brand, while pregnant.

There’s no definitive reason for this and no long-term studies on any possible risks to the mother and baby of controlled whole body vibration exposure with exercise during pregnancy – it’s not something most people would be happy to test so our information comes from exposure to vibration in industrial settings, workplaces etc. where the vibration exposure often exceeds guidelines and has been indicated to be of possible risk. We just can’t compare industrial vibration to the fully controlled vibration used with exercise but we must list pregnancy as a contra-indication to vibration training and vibration therapy as we simply don’t know what risks or problems it could possibly cause.

A question is sometimes asked by customers who plan to become pregnant. They ask if it’s okay to keep using the vibration machines. The answer is, Yes, in fact it is recommended to continue with exercise to increase your strength and fitness. Just stop as soon as pregnancy is confirmed. We have had customers not know they were pregnant for a few months and they had no detrimental effects but we do insist you stop training, right away, when you know. We do not allow you to continue.
